Pontcanna: Cardiff’s trendiest neighbourhood

Pontcanna is an area that should need no introduction by now. Carving out a niche for itself as Cardiff’s hippest neighbourhood, this district is home to some of the best eateries and bars in town, and we’ve rounded up our faves.

Pontcanna Inn

The Pontcanna Inn is ideally situated on Cathedral Road, close to Sophia Gardens. The menu consists of hearty and healthy foods, and the drinks menu offers a range of craft beers, real ales, ciders, wines, cocktails and spirits. This is the perfect place to watch live sports – there’s often a BBQ going for you to enjoy in their welcoming garden.

The Cricketers

Rated as one of the three best pubs in Cardiff, The Cricketers is a firm favourite in the city. Set in a classic Victorian townhouse on Cathedral Road, the pub offers a sunny beer garden in the summer months and an open fire during the winter. The Cricketers boasts quality food, such as the classic Cricketers burger or freshly seared scallops, and ingredients only come from local suppliers. The menu changes regularly, with a daily menu plus chalk-board specials. Sunday lunch is a big event at The Cricketers, so be sure to book a table!

Brød

This stylish Danish bakery and coffee stop on Wyndham Crescent is all you need for a relaxing afternoon. From delicious pastries and crusty loaves, to freshly made sandwiches, there’s sure to be something to make your mouth water.

Bully’s

This family run french-inspired restaurant on Romilly Crescent is one of Cardiff’s known little gems. Creating a continental cuisine, Bully’s uses seasonal produce from Welsh providers, complemented by a unique French wine list sourced from small, passionate growers. Popular for its beautifully presented food with exquisite flavours, this eclectic venue is great for an evening meal.

Cardiff Distillery

You couldn’t possibly head to Pontcanna without stopping at Cardiff Distillery on Cathedral Road. The quirky bar and restaurant offers awesome brunch over a chilling atmosphere, as well as wood fired pizza which you can enjoy from the comfort of your very own dining pod – an igloo-like bubble that allows for a unique, private experience, all whilst ensuring social distancing! The place also has a gin school and offers both gin and cocktail masterclasses. This is definitely not a place to miss.

Brewhouse & Kitchen

One for the craft brewing fiends, this sprawling bar and kitchen just shy off the Taff boasts one of the city’s best beer line ups. Alongside their own on-site microbrewery, they’ve got an impressive selection across the taps and fridges that showcase the best pints from home and abroad. And for soaking that all up, you can chow down on everything from small plates and sides, to speciality burgers and meaty main courses.
